Language Learning

Language Learning

Today has been rather interesting... I went to see my doctor who had to repeat everything twice or thrice to allow me understand the simple French being spoken: how will you pay, etc.
Words I have heard before, I might add.

I studied French for years and thought I had adequately mastered the language to survive comfortably,in any francophone (French speaking) country. Ha!Little did I know that I've been lying to myself...

Knowing the words in your head does not equal speaking them aloud..

My advice to language learners, SPEAK! Practice! You can't get enough of it.
That's the best way to learn...by practicing the words that you learn so they come alive and become permanent.

Keep learning...There's hardly a dull moment if you do...

Illusion of Competence, Life-long Learning and broadening your Passions

What is the illusion of competence?

Sounds interesting right? It is.

It's a state of mind where you tell yourself that you have 'learned' the material by browsing through the pages, underlying or highlighting key concepts and making small notes at the sides of the pages without actually memorizing or working on any related exercises. I was rather adept at this... This usually does not yield much results after the date or time that the supposed learning occurs.

Now, how is this fixed?

A couple of helpful steps to actually learn:
  1. Practice makes permanent: the more you practice, the more what you learn is made permanently ingrained in memory. However, spaced repetition and practice are best, so as to give the brain time to store the new material.
  2. Recalling: this involves bringing to mind at a later date and time, previously acquired knowledge. This helps to build a connection between all the concepts that are learnt. Recalling material outside the usual study area is best...I usually try to recall while out on a walk...to allow the diffused mode to function.
The concept of life-long learning is basically about the fact that learning continues throughout life and never ends. I am learning to use the knowledge I gain here in my everyday life. I use a planner and visual idea to remember items on my shopping list, I'm learning to reward myself whenever I accomplish a particularly difficult time, exercise as part of resting the brain and gain confidence in the new systems I create.

So, for me learning new skills in accounting and business (which are far from my innate talents) is possible because I have decided to broaden my passions and not believe that I'm better-off sticking to what I do best.

Keep learning and be happy while you're at it...

Sleep and Memory

The effects of sleep on learning and memory.

I never really considered the impact of inadequate sleep on the brain, even after choking on exams because I tried to cram everything into my brain the night before....a not so wise idea!

What exactly does sleep entail? Total deactivation of the conscious person. This is sort of like when you put your laptop to sleep and it's resting quietly but functions in a more relaxed environment which I will call the subconscious.

When we sleep, our brains use this opportunity to wash away toxins from our brains and to erase irrelevant information that we have acquired during the day. Sleep also allows you to grasp huge portions of information called 'chunks' more easily.

So what happens when we don't sleep enough...over a long period of time? I can tell you...we're cranky, moody, depressed and can even become ill with headaches and other stuff that is easily avoidable.

I recommend that we

Procrastination and the Pomodoro

Procrastination is one of the major problems encountered when learning anything new or even performing everyday acts.

What is procrastination?? Well, it's that lovely little habit of putting off 'unpleasant' tasks till the very last minute...sound familiar? Why do we procrastinate? Because we experience some discomfort in our brains when we think of the tasks we need to perform, or that assignment that we're convinced is particularly difficult, maybe even a conversation that we simply do not want to have; and then we postpone all that unpleasantness till a later date and move on to something more interesting like watching tv, surfing the internet or even sleeping....

But...a solution is here!!!

The Pomodoro

This amazing technique involves working in concentration and a focused mode, meaning no distractions from the tv, cellphones, friends, etc; for 25 mins  followed by a reward ( some chocolate or ice cream in my case). Trust me, it works like magic! I know how much procrastination it has helped me avoid over the past few weeks...
It helps you get all the unpleasant stuff done in no time...

Another solution that comes highly recommended involves 'eating your frogs first'.
Now, I don't mean eat live frogs...Just work on the most unpleasant tasks first thing in the  morning while you're still fresh and bright...It works best if you're a morning person...I think.

I really hope that you try these out and have even better results...

The Most Amazing Learning Techniques on the Planet!

The Most Amazing Learning Techniques on the Planet!

Learning is a never ending process that continues till death, as Albert Einstein says 'once you stop learning, you start dying'.
Unfortunately, most people go through various stages of life with the illusion that they're learning, whether in school or at home, but in reality, they aren't really learning. I have come to understand that learning involves constant repetition and practice (spaced out, over some amount of time) of whatever one desires to learn , to ensure that it remains permanent. Anything that is 'learnt' but isn't permanent is therefore crammed.

Most people grow up with the impression that they should focus all their energy on what they're best at and not try to learn anything different. I have discovered that this is a farce and anyone can learn new things if they do it the right way (practice and repetition).

The ideas that have really struck a cord with me include the diffuse form of learning which is more relaxed and allows the brain to look at things from a broad perspective; chunking, memory and long term learning.
Some major problems that most learners (such as myself) encounter during learning include procrastination, overlearning,  illusions of competence in learning; as well as ignoring the relevance and importance of sleep to the learning process.

Ways to improve learning include: visualization in study, spaced out practice and repetition of material(with no distractions), memorization techniques using funny memorable images and sentences; and focusing on the learning process and not the end result of the process (the product).

In later posts, we will look a bit more into solving these issues and also how to learn in a way that suits a person adequately since everyone does not learn in the exact same manner. Also, the steps that will ensure that learned material is permanent and goes into long-term memory will be looked at here.

Remember, learning is fun...
