Sleep and Memory

The effects of sleep on learning and memory.

I never really considered the impact of inadequate sleep on the brain, even after choking on exams because I tried to cram everything into my brain the night before....a not so wise idea!

What exactly does sleep entail? Total deactivation of the conscious person. This is sort of like when you put your laptop to sleep and it's resting quietly but functions in a more relaxed environment which I will call the subconscious.

When we sleep, our brains use this opportunity to wash away toxins from our brains and to erase irrelevant information that we have acquired during the day. Sleep also allows you to grasp huge portions of information called 'chunks' more easily.

So what happens when we don't sleep enough...over a long period of time? I can tell you...we're cranky, moody, depressed and can even become ill with headaches and other stuff that is easily avoidable.
